Current Research and Writing

“Structural Racism and the United States Supreme Court Since 1970” (monograph)  This is a cross-
disciplinary analysis of structural racism and the role of the United States Supreme Court in
perpetuating it.  As distinguished from traditional forms of racism, structural racism is the pattern
of social structures that establishes and perpetuates white advantage and the subordination of people
of color.  It is the product of racialized social systems maintained in part by law.  My contribution as a sociologist describes how structural racism accounts for the persistent disparities in all measures
of quality of life between people of color and whites in the United States today.  My co-author,
William M. Wiecek, a legal historian, is analyzing decisions of the Supreme Court since 1970 that
have confirmed structural racism and prevented other institutions of government from attempting
to eradicate it.

“In the Company of Men: Women Firefighters in the United States Today” (monograph)  I am both an academic sociologist and a volunteer firefighter/emergency medical services provider.  In those joint roles, I am doing qualitative research on the obstacles women face in becoming firefighters and doing their job once they are assigned to stations.  Though considerable research has been done on women in other occupations dominated by men, such as law enforcement, very little explores the issues that confront women in the fire service, such as testing physical ability, reproductive health and parenting, provision of protective equipment, and sexual harassment.  I am interviewing some of the 5,200 career firefighters and 30,000 volunteer firefighters in the U.S. who are women to document the barriers that they face.
